A Dickens of a Christmas

Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society Choir,
Trinity Church, Ringwood

HAVING always thought that a Dickensian-style Christmas sounded just my cup of tea, I couldn’t have been more pleased to begin my round of seasonal reviewing with this splendid concert, in which Mr Dickens’ characters featured strongly.

As well as the jolly That’s What I’d Like For Christmas from the musical Pickwick, we were treated to a reading from A Christmas Carol plus the extremely funny and beautifully performed In Which The Pickwickians Disport Themselves Upon The Ice. Not that there was any ice in the church, you understand, although it was easy to believe that there might have been.

In between times there were some very unusual compilations, such as A Medieval Christmas Festival and An African Celebration, plus delightful songs like Sleigh Bells and Down in Yon Forest, and Colin Petheram and Sonya Foulds’ musical interludes, Minuet a l’Antique and That’s What Friends Are For. And of course the evening would not have been complete without The Hallelujah Chorus and the many traditional carols.

We were all encouraged to join in the latter, and with inspirational musical director Ivy Guy at the helm the audience couldn’t help but sing as lustily as the excellent, highly animated choir.
