ANYONE who has never seen the RMDS summer concert might be forgiven for thnking that it is just a simple, light-hearted entertainment put together to give both audience and cast a good time.
And in some respects they would be right - but make no mistake, the easy feel of the show is the result of a phenomenal amount of hard wok by the performers, crew and, above all, the directors.
The first section, by Jane Howell and owing rather more to belles (and beux) than bells, came complete with dancing reindeer, ballet, a George Formby number and the comic Peter Sellers/Sophia Loren Oh Doctor, I'm In Trouble.
Richard Bennett's Book, with a splendid giant book set, featured such divers characters as Pickwick, Adrian Mole, Doctor Doolittle and the Guards at Buckingham Palace - minus Christopher Robin and Alice - as well as a very amusing depiction of Hans Christian Andersen's The King's New Clothes.
Last, but by no means least, was the brilliant gothic-style Candle, devised by the amazingly imaginative Sheryle Daniels and played on a wonderful castle-type set as a kind of Rocky Horror Show meets Phantom Of The Opera, Oliver and Sweeney Todd.
The entire evening proved that RMDS is blessed with a wealth of talent.
   Long may it continue.
